Same 'ole conversation on race

Dimension: Race

Yes, even I am getting a bit weary of commenting on race issues as opposed to other dimensions of diversity. But race makes the news so often...what can I say? This past weekend diversity news focused on the arrest of Professor Gates, Harvard Professor. He was actually cuffed and taken to the station for disorderly conduct when police came to his home to investigate a possible break-in (by him!). There are two sides to every coin and I have read the police report and comments from many bloggers...and it is the same, predictable script coming from both sides of the fence. It validates my point that until we develop diversity competencies for the Self 2.0--unraveling intention and impact; holding multiple realities; moving from certainty to curiosity; understanding and using privilege as a life skill; and quality decision making--the conversation will never change.

  1. What did you think of President Obama's comments on this incident?
i wonder if Gates didn't give the cop a hard time, (at least that is what the reports are saying), the officer would have acted differently?
It goes back to the old saying of being "extra nice" in times of distress.

  2. Very true. Both needed to use restraint. And Obama I believe was talking as a friend and forgot that he was President if the US and everything he says comes under that umbrella.
